FISHING TALES & REPORTS

2008 Fishing Reports

July 2008
07/30/2008:  Out on an evening after work special with a couple of nice guys up from PA.  Setup West of the river in 120' fow with a couple of deep trools and some meat rigs.  It was a Lake Trout kind"a night.  They were going pretty good for us.  I did mark some deep kings but, just couldn't turn em.  They were probably shut down from the earlier storm we had that day.

07/28/2008:  Started just West of the river today in 60 fow working my way WNW.  Slow start to the day, around 8:30a we took our first shot and missed it. Missed a 2nd opportunity and finally 3rd time was a charm with a nice steelhead.  As I was feeling a groove coming and restting lines I was informed of a sick passanger that needed a reprieve so, we headed in to the marina.  After losing an hour+ or so we got word of an offshore bite with kings and steelies.  Off to the deepwater we went, around 11:15a got there and set up.  I expected by that point in time things woud have settled down and they did.  Managed to pop a king 91' on a wonder bread.  Spun on the spot and no repeats.  Continued to move around and found some bait and took a steelhead off that mound.  Spun on them and took another one, stayed with that bait for another hour + without a go.  For all the moving around and lost time it was still a good day and great time and laughs with some great folks.  Thanks!

July has been a travel and tournament month for me.  Stay tuned for photos and details.

June 2008

06/28-29: Saturday was a hunting day, seeking possible locations of set up offshore fish. I trolled from the 21N to the 29N (200 to 600fow).  I had a blank screen almost the entire way with the exception of 5 marked fish in an 8 mile stretch. We had 2 pokes and landed 1 steely.  Sunday I had a trip; I stayed inside setup in 60 fow and worked out to 140’.  Lots of bait on the floor in shallow, as we got a little deeper we started to mark some fish.  Took a little while, but we finally broke the ice with a nice steelhead off a free sliding cheater.  Shortly after that we picked up another on the 5 color lead core and a brown trout off a free slider as well.  We dumper about 4 more and were wrapped up by noon.

06/07/2008:
Out Saturday. HOT and BUGGY were the words of the day.  I personally like the heat, but I forgot my bug spray and “Wholy Crap” I won’t forget it next week.  I marked nice bait on the floor in 50 to 80 fow and worked an early deep program to turn up 1 coho.  As the morning progressed I had a steelhead and a king go off free sliding cheaters, which neither converted.  I ended up rolling over to a Lake Trout program late morning that finally provided the bites to give us a day.  It can be humbling at times and just goes to show that they can’t all be super silver days, but that the Rochester fishery is diverse enough an area to provide for excellent fishing even on tough days.

May 2008
05/28/2008: Fished west of the Genny in 85 to 140 fow.  Surface lines were going with red or orange spoons w/weights, riggers were firing at 62,52,42 with black or green spoons, Silde Divers were going at 85 and 95 out on a 3 setting stretched 30 & 40 back and the Torpedo Diver (Cuda) down the center with a mag spoon was steady.

05/25/2008:
Fished with Steve Allen on the Summer Wind along with Capt. Randy Calus.  Fished a couple miles West of the river in 80 to 140 fow.  Nice Steelhead bite on the surface w/red spoons, split shots 6’ up. Riggers took the majority of the King bite down 50 to 70 feet on black & green spoons and the Torpedo Diver (Cuda) down the shute took 2 Kings as well with mag spoons.

05/16-17:
Great weekend of fishing.  Friday worked out front of the Genesee in 85 fow, found a nice temp break and a debris slick to support it. On the outside of the slick no bites, inside the slick, bites.  Took some nice steelies and cohos, all off the surface with small spoons and stick baits.  Silver fishing shut down around 10a so we slid out
to 150’ and started a Lake Trout program that rounded off the day beautifully.  Sat:  While fishing LT’s on Friday we noticed some high hooks that were silvers, so that was our start point for Sat. Worked the top 40’ of the water column and had a nice mix bag bite of steelies, kings and a brown thrown in the mix that stayed steady for most of the day.

05/14/2008: Fished the morning and afternoon of the Red Cross Tourney.  AM portion, fished for Lake Trout and did pretty well with our best weight being 13.8lb.  Afternoon portion we got brave and took a crack at some silver fish which have been difficult the last 10 days or so.  Nothing’s changed (yet), we pulled 1 6.25lb Steelhead.  The good news is, it was a beautiful day out, the seas were good to us and I believe the Red Cross made a substantial amount of money for a great cause.  We look forward to seeing everyone next year.

05/03/2008:  Out on Saturday, worked the Genny River plum from 15 to 40 fow.  Nice mixed bag of fish including kings, browns and a steelhead.  Had stick baits in natural & red/brown going, wonder bread, watermelon & blk/silver spoons off riggers and slide diver lite bites.

April 2008

04/28/2008: Out Saturday 26th  fished off the East side of the Genny without any action first thing.  Moved over to the West side off Russell Station and started a brown bite with green/white spoons and natural stick baits off the boards back 125 to 150’.  Had a half day trip so I stayed with the inside program.  Back out Sunday 27th after heavy rains Sat. evening.  The inside water was gin clear, still gave the browns an opportunity without success.  Moved out to the deeper water and slowly started building steam on a coho bite that turned out to be our day. Worked 150 to 200 fow with red stick baits and spoons off the boards and 28 sized red spoons and white spoons off the riggers.

04/12/2008: Fished East between Ship Builders and the Webster Pier, went 11 for 17 on browns.  Scorpion size Michigan Stingers off the riggers, Minnow, Chartreuse and black stick baits off the boards w/o weight.
